Google Chat in Claude Code, Cursor and Claude Desktop
Your team lives in Google Chat, and you want Claude to read the spaces, summarize what you missed and draft replies. Claude has connectors for Slack and Gmail, but Google Chat needs an MCP server — and the options differ a lot in setup.
This guide compares Google's own Chat MCP server with a hosted one, and walks through the faster setup.
Option 1: Google's Chat MCP server (Developer Preview)
Google publishes remote MCP servers for Workspace products, including Chat at chatmcp.googleapis.com. According to Google's setup guide, it is part of the Workspace Developer Preview Program, and you need to:
- create a Google Cloud project and enable the Chat API and the Chat MCP API;
- configure a Chat app in the Cloud console;
- set up an OAuth consent screen, create an OAuth client and add the Chat scopes;
- register the server in your AI client with that client id and secret.
It is the right choice if you are a Workspace admin or developer and only need Chat. The tools cover searching and listing messages, sending, and marking conversations read.
Option 2: a hosted MCP server with Google Chat built in
Goptin connects Google Chat with a normal Google sign-in — no Cloud project, no Chat app, no OAuth client of your own. The same MCP server also carries your Slack workspaces, Microsoft Teams, Jira and ClickUp, so one prompt can read a Google Chat space and comment on the matching Jira ticket.
Tools: list_conversations, read_conversation, search_messages, send_message, plus get_digest for a morning summary across every account. Several Google accounts can be connected side by side, for example a company Workspace and a client's.
Set it up with Goptin (about 2 minutes)
- 1Connect Google ChatStart the free trial at app.goptin.com, open Connections and sign in to Google Chat. Repeat for a second Google account if you have one.
- 2Create a personal tokenIn Settings → Integrations, create a token. It is shown once, stored only as a hash, and revocable.
- 3Add the server to your clientClaude Code below. Configs for Cursor, VS Code, Windsurf, Codex, Gemini CLI and Claude Desktop are on the MCP page.
claude mcp add --transport http goptin https://app.goptin.com/mcp --scope user --header "Authorization: Bearer goptin_…"
- 4Ask about your spaces"What did the client ask in Google Chat today? Draft a reply and show it to me before sending."

FAQ
Is there an official Google Chat connector for Claude?
Not as a built-in Claude connector. Google offers a Chat MCP server in its Workspace Developer Preview, which you register yourself with your own Cloud project and OAuth client.
Does Goptin work with a company Google Workspace?
Yes, with one caveat: Google still shows its unverified-app screen for Goptin while verification is in progress. A Workspace whose admin blocks unverified apps needs the admin to allow Goptin first.
Will Claude post in Google Chat on its own?
No. The server tells the model to show you the exact message first, and Claude Code asks for permission before every send.
Can I use Google Chat and Slack in the same prompt?
Yes. Both come through the same server, and every tool takes an account argument, so Claude can read one and write to the other.
How much does it cost?
The MCP server is included in every Goptin plan, including the 14-day free trial — no card required.
No card needed. Revoke the token any time in Settings → Integrations.
